It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas – especially in the homes of our brilliant designers! After all, they are the experts in designing beautiful homes all year round so I have no doubt they have some excellent tricks up their sleeves for the festive season.
That’s why I’ve asked our designers to share some of their Christmas décor wisdom with us so we can all rock around our beautifully decorated Christmas trees.
How to decorate a Christmas tree

We have some great Christmas tree décor hacks. Our designers recommend taking some time to spruce up the branches on your tree, especially if it isn’t a real tree. Each branch should be shaped and tweaked to look full and even.
Top tip: wear cotton gloves so you still have the dexterity to manipulate the branches as you please without hurting your hands in the process.

Establish a Cohesive Color Palette
Instead of simply using every ornament you own, think like a designer and choose a tight color palette.
- Classic Chic: Deep forest green, rich cranberry red, and brushed gold.
- Modern Scandinavian: Crisp white, natural wood tones, and cool silver accents.
- Unexpected Pop: Navy blue, emerald green, and metallic copper.
Limiting your colors creates a sophisticated, high-end feel that instantly elevates your look.
Focus on Texture and Layering
A designer’s secret is that decor isn’t just about color; it’s about texture. Layering different materials adds depth and warmth.
- Swap textiles: Introduce cozy elements like faux fur throws, velvet ribbons, or chunky knit stockings.
- Bring in nature: Use fresh pine boughs, preserved eucalyptus, or dried orange slices for an organic, tactile feel.
- Mix metallics: Combine matte finishes with polished ones—for example, a matte gold vase next to a shiny silver candle holder.
Decorate Beyond the Tree
The Christmas tree is the star, but a professional designer ensures the holiday theme flows throughout the entire home.
- Mantlepiece Magic: Create a stunning vignette with varying heights of candles, garlands, and framed holiday art.
- Tabletop Trays: Use decorative trays on coffee tables and kitchen islands to group ornaments, pinecones, and small fairy lights. This creates designated “holiday moments.”
- Elevate the Entryway: A simple wreath, a potted mini-pine, and a string of lights set the festive mood the moment guests arrive.

Illuminate Strategically
Good lighting is essential in design, and Christmas lights are no exception.
- Soft, Warm Glow: Stick to warm white lights (2700K or lower) for an inviting, cozy atmosphere.
- Tree Lighting Density: Designers often recommend 100 lights per foot of tree height for a truly dazzling effect.
- Hide the Cords: Tidy up unsightly wires with tape, zip ties, or by weaving them behind furniture and textiles.
By incorporating these simple, designer-approved steps, you can create a cohesive, beautiful, and truly elevated holiday home this season!
